ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Welcome to
Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya

Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 2000. Teaching in Bengali as a General subject began in 2001, and from 2002 onward, Honours courses were introduced. At present, there are approximately 400 students in total, combining both Honours and General streams. Under the NEP system, Bengali is currently taught as Major, Minor, SEC, and AEC subjects.
At present, the Bengali Department has four highly competent women faculty members. The Head of the Department is Smt. Basudha Biswas, along with Dr. Antara Choudhury, Dr. Hena Biswas, and Dr. Bidisha Mahato. All of them teach the students with great care and dedication. Not only in academics, they always stand by the students in any kind of problem. While efficiently handling college and departmental responsibilities, they also remain regularly engaged in academic pursuits and research work.
Basudha Biswas’s area of interest is Medieval Bengali Literature. Dr. Antara Choudhury’s research focuses on the morphological analysis of phonological words in Bengali. Dr. Hena Biswas has conducted research on Bengali Chaitanya biographical texts. Dr. Bidisha Mahato has carried out research on women actors in theatre groups.
Throughout the year, various activities are regularly organized by the department. Every year, the departmental wall magazine titled “Jagori” is published through the initiative of the students. Special lectures are organized regularly by the department. Recently, international seminars were organized for two consecutive years. In November 2025, a book titled “Satyajit Ray: At the Core of Creation” was published as a tribute to Satyajit Ray.
The Bengali Department has conducted two Add-on courses on theatre over two years. At the end of the courses, students staged two plays, one of which was performed at the Ashoknagar Festival organized under the patronage of our President, the Honorable Shri Narayan Goswami.
Under the supervision of the College Research Committee, the Local Area Research project, that is, the Ashoknagar Project, was completed with great care by the faculty members and students of the department. The Bengali Department conducted research on the topic “Ashoknagar: Shola Craft and the Land of the Survival of Artisans.”
Students are taken on educational tours every year. New students are welcomed through a freshers’ reception, and final-year students of the Bengali Department are given farewell receptions with best wishes for their future. Current students of the Bengali Department participate in various competitions both within the college and outside and win prizes. They also actively participate in various activities of the college NSS unit.
Students of the Bengali Department are continuously bringing distinction to themselves in higher education as well. An alumna of the department, Jesmina Khatun, qualified the NET (for Ph.D. admission) examination in December 2025. Many other former students of the department are working with distinction in various government and private sectors, thereby enhancing the reputation of the department as well as the college.
