The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya arranged a One Day International Seminar entitled “Impact of Media and Communication on Today’s Society: Diverse Perspectives” on 6th June 2022 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The resource persons were Mr. Rajib Nandy, Assistant Professor, Student Advisor, and Director, Career Advice Centre, Department of Communication and Journalism, The University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, and Dr. Maumita Chaudhuri, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Communication, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, West Bengal.
The seminar was well attended by professors and students of the college as well as from other colleges; around 21 research paper presenters and more than 60 participants were present on the day. Smt. Rosona Khatun, State Aided College Teacher, Category-I and Coordinator of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication moderated the seminar. The main aim of this seminar is to look at the impact of media and other communication mediums on today’s society from different perspectives.
The programme started at 11 a.m. with the inaugural speech of the Principal of the college, Dr. Sudhanath Chattopadhyay who welcomed the speakers to deliver their lectures. Then Dr. Papri Chakrabarti, IQAC Coordinator, Assistant Professor, and HoD of the Department of Music delivered the keynote speech. The President of the Governing Body of the college and Member of the Legislative Assembly Sri. Narayan Goswami delivered the enthusiastic speech which was followed by an engaging introduction of the 1st resource person by Dr. Shree Chatterjee, IQAC member and Assistant Professor and HoD of the Department of Education. The first speaker, Mr. Rajib Nandy spoke on Mobile Journalism: Diffusion of Innovations in Digital Journalism and Culture of Fear: Lessons and Perceptions, and how it impacts culture and society. After that followed by an engaging introduction of the 2nd resource person by Smt. Sukanya Som, IQAC member and Assistant Professor of the Department of History. The second speaker, Dr. Maumita Chaudhuri spoke on different mediums of communication has an impact on the society and how they mould the general perception of the society.
In the paper presentation session, Dr. Maumita Chaudhuri, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism and Communication, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, West Bengal, and Sri. Anindya Dey, Associate Professor and HoD of the Department of Sociology, Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya chaired the sessions. The presenters presented their original research about diverse perspectives on the impact of media on society. The one-day international seminar was brought to an end with a vote of thanks by Sri. Jayanta Rana, IQAC member, and Associate Professor, and HoD of the Department of English. Certificates were distributed among the presenters and participants at the end of the seminar.


Three-Week Online Lecture Series on
“Effect of Mass Media in India"

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya arranged a Three-Week Online Lecture Series entitled “Effect of Mass Media in India” from 1st December 2022 to 22nd December 2022. The resource persons were Dr. Kaifia Ancer Laskar, Assistant Professor, Aliah University, Kolkata; Dr. Mohammad Reyaz, Assistant Professor, Aliah University, Kolkata; and Mr. Pranotosh Nandy, State Aided College Teacher, Category-I, Department of Journalism and Communication, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College, West Bengal.
The online lecture series was well attended by professors and students of the college; more than 40 participants were present in the lecture series. Smt. Rosona Khatun, State Aided College Teacher, Category-I and Coordinator of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Smt. Moumita Sarkar, State Aided College Teacher, Category-I, moderated the three-week lecture series. The main aim of this three-week lecture series is to look at the effect of media from various perspectives in India.

This online lecture series focused on the effect of mass media in different aspects of India. Dr. Kaifia Ancer Lascer delivered lectures on “Advertisement and Public Relations Praxis: Some Emerging Issues” and “Tabloidization of Press: Ethical Concerns”. Dr. Mohammad Reyaz delivered lectures on “Visual Grammar and Elements of TV News” and “Critically Assessment of Public Service Broadcasting”. Mr. Pranotosh Nandy delivered lectures on “Overall Impact of Software on Print Media for Editing Newspaper: Special Focus on Quark Express and Adobe Photoshop Software” and “Recent Trend on Advanced Newspaper and Magazine Editing Process”.
This lecture series helps participants understand different perspectives of mass media effects in India. The three-week online lecture series was brought to an end with a vote of thanks by Smt. Rosona Khatun for the success of this series.

Workshop on
"Journalistic Writing Skills and Technicalities"

The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, together with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), presented a Three‑day workshop aimed at sharpening students’ journalistic writing abilities and familiarizing them with the technical aspects of the trade. The event featured a resource person Purbadri Mukhopadhyay, a teaching associate in Nahata college and guest faculty from the kanyasree university.
Objectives-
- Enhance students’ news‑writing and feature‑writing skills.
- Introduce the technicalities of editing, layout, and multimedia storytelling.
- Provide hands‑on experience with industry‑standard tools.
- Foster a collaborative learning environment among students and faculty.
Participants-
- All students from the Journalism & Mass Communication department.
Conclusion
The workshop successfully bridged the gap between classroom theory and professional practice. It equipped students with essential journalistic writing skills and technical know‑how, preparing them for future careers in media. The department plans to organise similar capacity‑building events in the upcoming semester.


Two-Day Workshop on
“Newspaper Page Making and Content Development”

Date: 9th and 10th January 2026
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Netaji Satabarshiki Mahavidyalaya, organised a two-day workshop titled “Newspaper Page Making and Content Development” on 9th and 10th January 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The resource person was Mr Pratik Kar (RJ Samrat), RJ at 94.3 Radio One, Deputy Editor of Sambad Kolkata, Senior Lecturer (Podcaster) at Swami Vivekananda University, Kolkata, and Guest Lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College.
The workshop was well attended by students from all journalism and mass communication courses (Major and Minor); 23 students actively participated. Rosona Khatun, Coordinator of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, coordinated and moderated the workshop, and Moumita Sarkar, a faculty member in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, jointly coordinated it. The main aim of this workshop is to understand how media content is created professionally and to gain hands-on experience editing newspaper pages and producing broadcast content using relevant software.
The workshop began on 9th January 2026 at 11 a.m., with the permission of the college Principal, Dr. Satabdi Biswas, and the keynote speech by GB member Dr. Papri Chakrabarti, who welcomed the speaker to proceed with his lecture and share his experience about software.
The second day of the workshop on 10th January 2026 began at 11 a.m.. At the end of the workshop, the Principal of the college, Dr. Satabdi Biswas, delivered an encouraging speech and thanked the resource person. She was given some of the students’ certificates after the two-day workshop, and other faculty members attended the closing ceremony. They also presented students with certificates upon completion of the workshop. The two-day workshop concluded with a vote of thanks from Moumita Sarkar, who jointly coordinated the workshop. Rosona Khatun delivered a Thanksgiving speech to the college principal, Dr. Satabdi Biswas; the IQAC coordinator, Dr. Shree Chatterjee; the resource person, Mr. Pratik Kar; and other faculty members who support and encourage the workshop. The department’s students have extensive experience in professional newspaper work and software-related tasks.
